WordPress 7.0 was originally planned to ship live on stage during Contributor Day at WordCamp Asia 2026 in Mumbai — a first for a major core release. In the days before the event, however, plans changed.
According to coverage of the run-up to the conference, WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg called for the release to be held back so the release squad and core committers could finish adding a new database table needed to support real-time collaboration. Rather than the planned live-release moment, WordCamp Asia organizers swapped in a panel discussion and Q&A walking through what’s coming in 7.0, alongside a push for additional community testing.
Billed by some outlets as the biggest WordPress release in eight years, 7.0 centers on three headline additions:
- Real-time collaboration — multiple editors working in the same document simultaneously.
- AI connectors — built-in hooks for connecting AI tools into the editing workflow.
- A refreshed admin experience — updates to the wp-admin interface.
For APAC agencies and site owners, the practical takeaway is the same as with any major core release: test on staging first, especially if you’re running heavily customized editor experiences or real-time-sensitive plugins.
